We are looking forward to working with your children this year and meeting you all too! Whilst we are confident all children will settle quickly, if there are any issues, please do not hesitate to contact us. We will be more than happy to help.
We will continue to use ClassDojo as a further means of communication. Please see our newsletter and curriculum map (below) for information about our routines and learning in Year 4.
In Year 4, your child will be provided with a stimulating, challenging, exciting curriculum that develops their curiosity and interest in the wider world around them. As stated in our motto, we aim to create brilliant citizens! Therefore, we have high aspirations for our children and endeavour to maximise their potential academically, socially, emotionally and otherwise through a broad, balanced curriculum that puts the children at the centre of learning and everything that we do.
Our classrooms are exciting places to learn and is fostered by a cooperative, collaborative approach to learning. In this, the children learn to work as part of a team whilst at the same time developing their independence. Should you walk into any of our classrooms, you are guaranteed to feel the buzz that is reciprocated by both the teachers and pupils which is a direct result of our enthusiasm and passion for learning. Why not be inquisitive and ask the children about what they have been learning? They will only be too happy to share!
PE and Swimming
All of the year 4 classes will have PE on Tuesday mornings and they will have swimming at Withington Baths on Wednesday mornings. On swimming days, the children should come in school uniform; often, children come in with their swimming kit underneath their uniform, ready to swim – just don’t forget to pack underwear to change back into and a towel for them to dry themselves! All children are expected to swim each week and if they forget their swimming kit, a spare will be provided. Where children are exempt from swimming for a medical reason, a doctor’s note must be brought to the office. A ClassDojo message or written note from a parent/carer will not warrant an exemption from swimming. Please see below for a list of the kit required each week for swimming lessons.
- One piece swimming costume or swimming trunks
- Swimming cap
- Towel
- Underwear (if coming to school ready to swim)
* Please note that whilst goggles are not forbidden, the coaches strongly suggest children learn without them, particularly when performing self-rescues.
Homework
Homework will be given out every Friday and must be returned by the following Wednesday. Maths homework will be set on www.mymaths.co.uk and https://ttrockstars.com/ (10 – 20mins every night) and English homework on https://www.edshed.com/en-gb/. If your child has forgotten their username and password or have any trouble with their homework, please inform their class teacher!
As reading is a high focus area in school, the children have their own reading books which should be brought into school every day and they are expected to read every night for 15-20 minutes. This will help them to develop their fluency, expression, accuracy and comprehension skills. Parents are kindly asked to encourage their children to complete a reading task in their reading journals once they have finished reading each book. This will help the children to demonstrate their understanding of the text as well as to deepen their understanding. Your child will only receive a new reading book when they have shown that they have read and understood the text. We appreciate your understanding with this.
