Margaret Ashton
Unveiling Ceremony
On International Women's Day - 8th March 2023, we decided to mark the important day with the story of an important local female figure...Margaret Ashton. The official unveiling of the mural, which stands proud on the side of the original school building (facing the playground and Vicker Grove), was celebrated with a ceremony involving our year 4 children presenting thier learning through drama and readings as well as speeches by the historial and Ashton expert, Ali Ronan and our headteacher Mrs Taylor.
The Rhodes Building
This part of Cavendish also has an interesting history. It started life as the Dr Rhodes Memorial Home in 1910 and it is believed it has space for up to150 children. It appears to have closed in c.1937 at which time Swinton House School was transferred into the site on Cavendish Road. We still have some of the original plans for this building and they are used as a learning resource by the older children at times. The Dr Rhodes Memorial Home was a residential school with live-in staff. It even boasted a solarium room, used, we think, for treating the conditions some of the children may have had. We are currently trying to find out more details about this part of our history.
Eventually, the building became Shawgrove School - a school for children with visual impairments and for a time these children joined the Cavendish children in many of their lessons.
