MFL Vision and Intent
Vision statement
At Cavendish Community Primary School, we believe that learning another language is an invaluable cultural and educational experience for our children. It enables them to appreciate their own culture as well as those of others and provides the foundation for language learning in their next stage of education.
We are committed to encouraging and nurturing children’s enthusiasm for languages and to developing their communication skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing as well as deepening their understanding of how language works. As a school, we believe that learning a foreign language should provide pupils with an opportunity to fuel their curiosity about the wider world.
We follow the Primary Languages Network, a language curriculum, which makes sure that "learning is creative, purposeful and memorable for all learners". Children in KS2 have a weekly Spanish lesson, during which teachers combine songs, games and fun activities to promote a love of language learning.
Statement of intent
We aim for pupils at Cavendish to:
- understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.
- speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say (including through discussion and asking questions) and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
- be able to write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.
- discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.
